Here's Some Good Information on Garden Landscaping
People have been landscaping their gardens for centuries.
England has been credited with modern garden landscaping. In the 18th century the English remodeled the great estate parks of the English Gentry to resemble aspects of nature.
Good landscape design more often than not tries to bring scaled down versions of the things you find in nature into your homes. For example you plant a few trees to represent a forest, or you have a small pond or waterfall to bring the feeling and atmosphere of a lake into your home.

The book Designing Gardens by Arabella Lennox-Boyd might be the best illustration of what good garden landscape design is. The book lays out fundamental design principals that anyone can incorporate into their own design.
There is so much great information in this book that after reading it your head will be spinning with ideas. Color schemes, use of plants, furniture, and my favorite the use of water are covered in detail in Designing Gardens.
