Creative Desert Landscaping
Desert landscaping can be quite fun and even complicated, despite the need to plant things that don’t require large amounts of water. Planting in the desert is different than planting just about anywhere else, because the soil is very dry and often lacking in nutrients. So, when you get into desert landscaping you might have to get a bit creative, but that’s the fun part of it all!
Desert landscaping is something that many people have never thought of, but those of us who live in the desert almost have to go for the Southwestern look so that we don’t constantly have to replant or water all day every day. Choosing plants that are hearty and do well without much water is required. Cacti are an ideal choice; because they are natural inhabitants of the desert and will do well just about anywhere you plant them.
Xero-scaping is very popular, and this is a type of desert landscaping that actually requires little or no water. Many people break up their yards into several distinct areas, usually separated by railroad ties, bricks, landscaping stone, or dowels. Then, on each level a different type of plant is planted. Most of the xero-scaping is dirt, but with cacti, yucca, and other desert resistant plants, a yard can be quite beautiful.
Nurseries in the desert can usually recommend what plants will grow best in your specific area, so definitely get in touch with someone who has the knowledge of what will easily add color and texture to your yard. Desert landscaping is easier when you have someone that really knows your area and what does well there.
A fun way to add a Southwestern flare to your yard is with things like pottery, or even a chiminea which looks like a little decorative fire place. You can actually plant a few cacti or other hearty plants in the chiminea for a truly beautiful look. Southwestern pottery and sculptures such as wolves are very effective and come in a variety of colors to make up for the inability to plant your typical shrubs and have them bring a bit of color to the yard.
Desert landscaping is often thought of as drab and boring, but it’s really not. It’s just that desert landscaping is different from your typical shrubs and flowers; it’s truly unique and creative. Even if you don’t live in the desert, you can get into desert landscaping to save time and money on your water bill!

The beauty of the desert is unsurpassed, and when you incorporate that desert landscape feel into your overall design it can have a stunning effect.
